Saute onion, ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes with 1/4 cup of canola oil until translucent. Once translucent add sugar, tamari, and vinegar; cook for 1 minute and let cool. Mix all ingredients, (except 3 cups of canola oil) in a large container and mix using the immersion blender. Once everything is mixed together and smooth slowly add the 3 cups of oil. Check for seasoning and add salt, ~1/2 cup and mix fully.
